Or even just acceptable professionalism, in messaging and direction. That level of leadership has been worse than absent. It’s been all over the place, frequently just about Trump and/or his grievances, and has at times sowed confusion, which is not helpful down the line to states, localities, and HC resources actually trying to execute solutions.

But I really do think any president would be struggling to execute a robust response to such a rapidly cascading crisis. Even If one did try to redirect the ship a month earlier. Trump is the opposite of competent crisis management, but the changes from these failures should go so much further than making Trump a 1 termer. We have stiff, clogged-up institutional bureaucracies that don’t appear nimble enough to keep up with cascades like this. We have to consider how to better respond to future pandemics, and other unexpected crises demanding more flexibility.

Now we just have to do the social distancing thing, I bet at least 6 more weeks like this (for me - pretty close to a shut in), with other states joining in after resisting it, and hope we can get resources where they’re needed quickly enough.
